Termites & Wood Destroying Insects
Home Inspections: Termite Damage
TERMITES AND WOOD DESTROYING INSECTS
Termites are insects that feed on wood and can cause severe damage within a home. Termites live in colonies with population of thousands. There are three main groups of termites, drywood termites which live in the drywood of buildings where they feed, dampwood termites which may be found in either soil or wood and subterranean termites, which live in soil and must locate the wood that they feed on. Subterranean termites are the most damaging of the three types. They can, if the right conditions, live up to 15 years, with colonies existing even longer. They can infest a building, and with their large population, can cause damage to lumber, wood panels, flooring, paper products, etc. Their most serious damage is to the buildings structural strength.
The first step in control of termites is a complete inspection of house, garage and other buildings located on property. If visible evidence of termites or structure damage is discovered, then a treatment is required. The use of insecticides is proper method of treatment. These chemicals should only be applied by trained and NJDEP licensed professional.
Other common types of wood destroying insects are carpenter ants, powder post beetles and carpenter bees.
Compass highly recommends to have yearly inspections and treatment if required of the house and other structures for proper control of wood destroying insects.
